Duvet togs explained: which tog for each season

By Linen Room. Updated 18 October 2026.

A tog rating measures how well a duvet holds in heat: the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. In the UK, 4.5 tog or less suits summer, around 7 to 9 tog suits spring and autumn, and 10.5 tog or more suits winter, with 13.5 tog for people who feel the cold. An all-season duvet is usually a 4.5 and a 9 tog that fasten together to make 13.5 tog.

Key facts

  • Summer: 4.5 tog or less.
  • Spring and autumn: about 7 to 9 tog.
  • Winter: 10.5 tog and up; 13.5 tog if you feel the cold.
  • All-season: 4.5 + 9 tog, used separately or together.

What tog actually measures

Tog is a measure of thermal resistance from a laboratory test. It tells you how warm a duvet is, not how thick or heavy it is: a feather and down duvet can be lighter and thinner than a synthetic one with the same tog (Expert Reviews tog guide).

When to swap

The clock changes are a handy reminder. Clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, which is a good point to bring out the winter duvet, and forward on the last Sunday of March, which is a good point to switch back.

Swap time is also the best time to clean. Put the duvet you are packing away into storage clean, because stains and body oils set over months and smell in a cupboard.

How to store the duvet you are not using

Make sure it is completely clean and dry. Store it in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic, somewhere dry. Feather and down duvets are best not kept vacuum-compressed for long periods, as they need room to recover their loft.

Questions

Good to know

What tog is best for all year?

A single 7 to 9 tog duvet works for many people year round. An all-season pair gives more flexibility.

What tog is a hotel duvet?

It varies by hotel. Many use a medium-warmth duvet with air conditioning or heating doing the rest, which is why a 7 to 10.5 tog feels hotel-like at home.

Should I clean my summer duvet before storing it?

Yes. Clean and fully dry before storage, in a breathable bag.
